Wine and beer could carry calorie warnings

Bottles of alcohol could soon display information on their calorie content to discourage women from drinking excessively, reports claim.

The proposal, which was made by the government's Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, is designed to target women who are desperate to avoid weight gain.

One suggestion is that a pint of lager could display information on units and calories, as well as alerting the drinker to the fact that it contains as many calories as a sausage roll.

However, a spokesman for the Wine and Spirit Trade Association expressed concerns about the proposals.

"It's good in principle for consumers to have the information to make an informed choice but you wouldn't want people choosing alcohol by calories or thinking they could have a drink and skip a meal," the spokesman told the Daily Mail.

"Alcohol with food is better and adults should decide based on alcohol content, not calories."

Health experts claim that alcohol is also bad for the skin as it causes dehydration, a blotchy complexion and can even lead to permanent enlargement of blood vessels.ADNFCR-1112-ID-18898106-ADNFCR
