Adults unsure of fruit and vegetable advice

Many British adults do not understand expert guidance on eating fruit and vegetables, new research has found.

Experts recommend that we eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day as they contain vital nutrients for our health and skin, including antioxidants.

However, a survey commissioned by Green Giant has found that many adults are unaware of what constitutes a healthy diet.

Researchers questioned 1,103 parents and found that one in five respondents incorrectly believed that fruit-flavoured sweets, spaghetti hoops and orange squash were included in the 'five-a-day' scheme.

Meanwhile, around one in 20 did not realise that oranges and bananas could contribute.

General Mills nutritionist Vanessa McConkey said that the findings were "disappointing and concerning" and advised parents to ensure that every meal includes a portion of vegetables or fruit.

Research published by the University of Illinois in 2001 found that antioxidants play a vital role in keeping skin firm and looking young.ADNFCR-1112-ID-18876522-ADNFCR
