People can spend hours in the gym working specific muscle groups aiming to tone and sculpt the body to a particular shape. The trouble is there are some parts of the body which are just your own personal fat stores. Some of these, the body will hang on to for as long as possible, regardless of what you eat or what you do.
Doing multiple abs exercises may help you lose weight but they won’t guarantee the weight comes off your ‘tummy’. If you lose enough weight then it will be mobilised eventually but by then your shape in other areas may not be what you desire either. We all need some fat in some places but a large number of us have more fat than we need in places we would prefer it not to be. Also if you manage to lose some of this fat what will happen to the excess skin?
So is there anything we can do about this? Is there anything we can do to target where the fat actually comes off?
Well fortunately the answer to that is yes! There are ways we can target fat loss. These vary in cost and degree of invasiveness. We can also do something about the skin laxity afterwards.
This month lets talk about two different treatments which vary in cost, invasiveness and end target.
Thermage v VASER Lipo
Thermage is the best non invasive skin tightener currently available. Long used on the face it is now increasingly used on the body to deal with skin laxity after child birth or significant weight loss. No anaesthetic is required. No cuts are made in the skin and the skin just tightens over a period of 4 to 6 months. More recently they have developed a technique which targets subcutaneous fat and cellulite with the same device. So it is now really good for those thighs with just a little too much fat but some cellulite and skin laxity all at the same time. ( A very common problem!!)
VASER Lipo is the latest, gentlest and best way of localised fat removal currently available. It can give a small degree of skin tightening too, to deal with the excess laxity caused primarily by the fat loss. It is relatively more invasive than Thermage but the down time is very short and the recovery is very quick. Unlike traditional liposuction where they do the first review at 3 months we can show 85% improvement within 3 weeks. Yes just 3 weeks. It is performed under local anaesthetic in an office procedure and the whole process is very much less traumatic than conventional liposuction.
Depending on how much fat you have to lose and how tight the skin is before the procedure you may be better off with VASER Lipo or Thermage. Some people with more significant problems may even benefit from both.
