Radio-frequency energy has been used for many years in the medical field. We have known for some considerable time that passing this energy through the body causes heating of the tissues and this level of heating has now been refined to a very well controlled level. The most obvious use of this has been in surgery where the technology has been used for direct local heating to assist in haemostasis and cutting. More recently we have been able to selectively heat local tissues to cause minimal levels of therapeutic damage.
What do we mean by therapeutic damage? I suppose surgery is a kind of therapeutic damage. The surgeon cuts the skin open to remove an inflamed appendix and then the skin fixes itself afterwards. An excellent surgeon who was a good friend of mine once said that his job was to cut out the bad bits and the body did all of the repair work. Interestingly enough we have known for thousands of years that minimal burns to the skin can stimulate healing and enhance/rejuvenate the skin surface. This is essentially the mechanism for both chemical peels and laser resurfacing.
Similarly heating can be used to denature our own internal collagen structure under the surface of the skin. This stimulates a repair process which creates newer healthier collagen fibres within the skin to produce younger more flexible tissues. This also causes a degree of tightening to occur which can lift facial features such as jowls and cheeks back towards there original positions. This allows us to produce a degree of facial lifting without any form of surgical intervention.
The best example of this is Thermage. I have often described this as one of the most discrete treatments I offer. The real and significant results available ease in slowly over a period of four to six months. This means no one else need know anything about it. There is no bruising or swelling of any significance and the patient goes home immediately after the treatment looking pretty much like nothing has happened at all. This treatment can lift jowls, raise eyebrows, plump out cheeks, tighten the skin around the eyes, tighten the skin of the upper and lower eyelids, all without resorting to surgery.
This therefore is a much safer and more gentle treatment than any kind of surgical intervention. The technology for this miraculous treatment is however pretty expensive and so the treatments could never be described as cheap. There are now, however, other simpler radio-frequency devices available too, and whilst these cannot achieve the heights of the results achievable with Thermage they can give a reasonable compromise between cost and benefit. This allows us to offer a range of radio-frequency treatments to cater to all needs and all budgets.
